Personal Training for Special Populations

We know that exercise is important and necessary. Everywhere we look, we are told to exercise. However, many of us do not know where to begin and who can help. In today’s society, many people fall into some sort of special populations category. This category includes populations such as seniors, people with specific medical diagnoses, teenagers and pregnant women. Just as each diagnosis is individual, so should each workout be. A personal trainer can assist you in accomplishing that specific workout which will benefit you most. He/she will keep safety a priority and teach you proper techniques to ensure the effectiveness of your exercises. The exercise in turn can aid in reducing symptoms and increasing your well-being.

So, how do you pick the right personal trainer for you? Find out what qualifications and education that he/she has. Unfortunately, there are no federal or state laws regulating who can and cannot practice as a personal trainer. There is also no universally accepted certification available for personal trainers. However, many reputable certifications do exist. Several personal trainers have a bachelor’s degree in some area of fitness as well. Find out if the trainer has any specific or additional training in your areas of concern (heart disease, pulmonary disease, arthritis, etc.). He/she may also obtain clinical experience to better serve you. For example, a trainer with experience in cardiac rehab would be best for one who recently has been diagnosed with heart disease. A good rule of thumb is to do your homework!

Health Zone has several personal trainers who have qualifications and experience in working with special populations. All of the trainers are either degreed in the health science field and /or certified with a reputable certification. Click here for a list of Health Zone's personal trainers.
